Weekly Torah Portion: Behukotai

This week’s portion is the final one in the Book of Leviticus. It is often read in conjunction with the previous portion, Behar.
Our portion contains a brief passage outlining the blessings God offers the Children of Israel on condition that they keep his statutes, then continues with a lengthy and detailed accounting of the curses He will visit upon them if they do not follow His commandments. The Torah then explains how to set the values of different gifts one might dedicate to the Temple, and likewise the values of mandatory Temple contributions. It also includes an exceptional circumstance, where redemption is not an option.

Worst civil disaster in the history of Israel

Israel just went through a tragic disaster that was the worst civilian disaster in its history.

Our friend Johannes Enarson just produced this very erudite and detailed video about the Antichrist and some fake news that has been going around recently. This is not the kind of stuff I like to post and it certainly will not be a precedent, but the quality of the content and the importance that my trusted friend assigns to this bring me to make this exception.

Holy of Holies

We often heard Reb Shlomo say, that not all of us are all that holy, but we are all mamash the holy of holies. You had to wonder sometimes what did he really mean by that? Was he just being sweet and wanting us to feel good? Last week in “Parsaht Kedoshim” we get a beautiful true definition of that concept. “K’doshim t’hiyu, ki kadosh, Ani Hashem Elohaichem,” you should all be holy , because I Hashem your God am holy ( Vayikra 19.2). In Vayikra Rabba the question is raised. Do I truly believe that I can emulate God and be as Holy as he? Of course not. The message here is that God, who is Holy and created holiness, placed “kedushah, “ holiness into each and every one of us. We are holy of Holy. The holiness is planted in us by Hashem. Our role is to nurture, actualize and have it grow, or chas v’shalom the opposite, divorce it from our being.
