exalt him. Exodus 15:2

This week’s portion Genesis 18:1-22:24 continues the story of Abraham as he establishes the foundation for the Jewish nation. Having circumcised himself at God’s command, he now encounters three visitors as he recuperates. Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed in this portion, and Abraham and Sarah find themselves sojourning in Gerar.

It will be a Blessing. What was it that Avram took with him when Hashem sent him on his way? “Lech L’cha,” go to yourself.

Having circumcised himself at God’s command, he now encounters three visitors as he recuperates. Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed in this portion, and Abraham and Sarah find themselves sojourning in Gerar. The birth of Isaac is recorded in this portion, and Ishmael is forced to leave. Abraham signs a peace
treaty, and finally, the portion ends with the binding of Isaac.

Torah study isn’t just Jewish tradition — it is a tool that can help children become willing to try on new ideas, and it challenges them to always ask new questions. Engaging with Torah is like doing yoga for the mind: it keeps our perspectives flexible and creativity strong.
Anyone, at any age, can study Torah — advanced degrees are never necessary to simply ask, “How is this text relevant to our world today?”

What was it that Avram took with him when Hashem sent him on his way? “Lech L’cha,” go to yourself. I am sending you as a representative on a journey and you need to look inward. Who were you? What has impacted you over the years both externally and at home? What do you take with you? What must you leave behind?
Avram had much to think about and internalize. To help guide him on this journey, Hashem gives over the following. “And I will make you into a great nation; and I will bless you; and I will make your name great, and it will be a blessing (Bereshit 12.2).
