The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

Dear ,
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Vayeshev Genesis 37:1 – 40:23, tells the story of Joseph’s sale and early years in Egypt, before his rise to fame and fortune. Joseph’s dreams and the attention he garners from his father prompt his brothers’ jealousy, and they set out to destroy him. Initially throwing him in a pit, they fish him out, sell him to traders heading towards Egypt, and trick their father into believing Joseph had been
killed. Joseph rises to prominence in his master’s household until his spurned mistress gets him jailed. There, he interprets dreams for two other prisoners. Meanwhile, back in Canaan, we read of Judah’s marriage, and the efforts he makes to find a match for his children.
Victoria Sarvadi, who helps administrate funding from the Nathaniel Foundation gives advice to Bob O’Dell about how donors “think” about the various kinds of requests they get. I, Bob O’Dell, specifically asked if she would be willing to take my questions on this topic.
Bob O’Dell plays the Apostle Peter telling the story of the day and the hour in which Peter first learned what it really means to be a leader in the Church.
Gidon came across this travelogue that Frank Sinatra(!) made almost 60(!) years ago in Israel! If you are a history buff like him, love Israel and like old Blue Eyes, this is the video for you!
The Struggle. This week’s music: “Not Without You” Yehudah Katz
“Vayivater Yaakov l’vado, va’ye’avek ish emo, ad allot hashachar” and Yaakov is left alone and a man struggles with him until the sunrise (Bereshit 32.25). What is this struggle all about? The Slonimer Rebbe quotes Bereshit Rabah which writes that this man was the “officer” of Esav. He wanted to make Yaakov fall down from the heights of his spirituality, as this was the only way he had any chance to take Yaakov down. There was no way he could get Yaakov to “eat from forbidden fruit,” so he
needed to play to a potential “doubt” in his spiritual side. I once heard from Rav Agassi that Rebbe Nachman of Breslov teaches that Yaakov was in a bit of a state of doubt.
We sign off with a lovely comment from Root Source student and a beautiful photo of En Gedi.
Shalom,
Gidon Ariel and Bob O’Dell

Interview: Victoria Sarvadi – Advice on seeking Hebraic Roots funding from Donors
Victoria Sarvadi, who helps administrate funding from the Nathaniel Foundation gives advice to Bob O’Dell about how donors “think” about the various kinds of requests they get. I, Bob O’Dell, specifically asked if she would be willing to take my questions on this topic. I see this conversation as a great learning opportunity for those seeking funding. As she explains, gaining funding should not be your first goal. Then what is?
Listen and find out. And please don’t interpret this video as if it is an open invitation to “cold call” the Nathaniel Foundation on your next Hebraic Roots project. You would do better to think of her advice, as advice for “all donors” who might already be in your circle of influence.
Both video and downloadable audio are provide for your convenience. (21:19)
Poem: The Peter Principle of Leadership
Bob O’Dell plays the Apostle Peter telling the story of the day and the hour in which Peter first learned what it really means to be a leader in the Church.
While not mentioned in the video itself, the title is a bit of a play on words regarding “The Peter Principle” which is a business concept developed in the late 1960s by Laurence J. Peter that people in an organization tend to rise to their “level of incompetence.” (8:45)
