This week, the weekly Torah reading Lech-Lecha,
Abram and Sarai travel to Canaan. Due to a famine in the land they temporarily relocate to Egypt, where Pharaoh unsuccessfully attempts to add Sarai to his harem. They return to Canaan with great wealth and Abram parts with his nephew Lot. Abram defeats the armies of the four kings who had taken his nephew Lot hostage. God seals a pact with Abram, bequeathing the lands of Canaan to his descendants. Childless Abram marries Hagar and she gives birth to Ishmael. God changes Abram's name to
Abraham, and Sarai becomes Sarah. Abraham is circumcised at the age of 99.
Rabbi Chaim Eisen of Jerusalem invites you to join him in his family succah and shows how he honors God with the four species.
Studio See 021. The eighth day of the Feast of Sukkot marks the joyous celebration of the turning over of the Torah (Simchat Torah), where
the study of Deuteronomy has completed and study of Genesis is begun.
As an added bonus to our series on the Midrash of our Forefather Paul, Bob O’Dell explains what Paul has to say about the Feast of Tabernacles (i.e. Sukkot), by reading the corresponding passages from Leviticus 23 and Romans 15. Amazingly, Paul seems to have an opinion on what time of year Jesus was
born.
On Rosh Hashanah imagine you are praying in the ancient Abuhav Synagogue in Tzfat. Pick a ripe pomegranate off the table of the Machane Yehuda shuk in Jerusalem. Hike the Arbel mountain at sunset. Gaze at the Land from atop Har Gilboa. These are just a few of the scenes in this year’s calendar.
We sign off with a
lovely quote from a Root Source student and an amazing photo.

Weekly Portion: Lech-Lecha – October 20 – 11th Cheshvan
|
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Lech-Lecha Genesis 12:1 – 17:27, God speaks to Abram, commanding him, “Go from your land, from your birthplace and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you.” There, God says, he will be made into a great nation. Abram and his wife, Sarai, accompanied by his
nephew Lot, journey to the land of Canaan, where Abram builds an altar and continues to spread the message of a one God.
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Isaiah 40:27 – 41:16, discusses Abraham’s journey to the land of Canaan at God’s behest, and touches upon Abraham’s miraculous battle against the four kings, both of which are described in this week’s Torah reading.
Happy studying!

The eighth day of the Feast of Sukkot marks the joyous celebration of the turning over of the Torah (Simchat Torah), where the study of Deuteronomy has completed and study of Genesis is begun. This is my third year of reading/studying the Torah in lockstep with
the Jewish reading plan, which partitions the first five books (Torah) into sections (or parashat) that are read over the course of a single year.
