This week, the weekly Torah reading Pinchas, Phinehas (Pinchas) is rewarded
for his bravery. A census of the Israelites is taken. The daughters of Zelophehad successfully argue for a portion in the land of Israel. Joshua is ordained Moses' successor. God relays to Moses the details of all the holiday sacrifices.
In the center of the campus of the University I attended was a tower, and on that tower was a Bible verse from the New Testament book of John 8:32. It reads “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” On the face of it, this is the motivation that Ray Montgomery and I had in mind when we offered last week to combine our two lists of Jewish persecutions by Christians throughout the centuries. We asked you the question: would you be willing to spend time looking at that truth on the 9th of Av, the day of Jewish fasting.
It is no secret or surprise that relations between Christians and Jews have not been good, to say the least, for close to two thousand years. Some Christians know, and all too few, of the atrocities that Christians have been guilty of over these centuries, but few know of their scope. Today, you can join an initiative of Root Source, an organization dedicated to building relationships between Jews and Christians based on trust and knowledge, set to coincide with Tisha Be'Av, the Jewish Memorial Day for these atrocities and more.
Root Source Interviews. In Part 6, Lesley shares from one of the chapters of her book, Bible Gems from Jerusalem, that addresses Jewish impact of the exile and the longings for Zion and Jerusalem.
We sign off with a lovely quote from a Root Source student and an amazing photo of a the Old City Tunnels.

Weekly Portion: Pinchas – 7 – 24th Tamuz
|
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Pinchas Numbers 25:10 – 30:1, Aaron’s grandson Pinchas is rewarded for his act of zealotry in killing the Simeonite prince Zimri and the Midianite princess who was his paramour: God grants him a covenant of peace and the priesthood.
In
this week’s Haftara Prophets reading I Kings 18:46 – 19:21, the prophet Elijah is the main protagonist. According to tradition, Elijah shared the same soul as Pinchas, the hero of this week’s Torah portion. They also both zealously fought on God’s behalf, while disregarding the dangers involved.
Happy Studying!

Root Source Interviews: Lesley Richardson – Jewish Exile and Jerusalem

Together with many Christians all over the world we feel deeply ashamed of our behavior.
|
Our
student Brecht enjoyed Root Source and had this to say. Brecht wrote: In The Netherlands there is a group of Christians, who feel a deep grief about the hostility towards Jews done
in the past. We are aware that it was Christians who discriminated against Jews, falsely accusing them of atrocities like ritual murder, water-poisoning etc. Together with many Christians all over the world we feel deeply ashamed of our behavior. We are conscious that the crimes committed are too enormous to forgive. Too horrible that they can be compensated. But since the 1980’s this group, with the consent of the Chief Rabbinate, is allowed to do maintenance work on the Jewish Cemeteries
in our country. We spend one week each year (this year starting on Tisha Be’Av) on cemeteries where work is most needed, like repainting letters on the tombstones, tilted stones are straightened up and -where possible-damaged ones are repaired. Each one of us very aware of the fact, that nothing can ever be compensated……. We are pleased to share with you this amazing photo of the Old City Tunnels.
