This week, the weekly Torah reading Devarim, begins the Book of
Deuteronomy, the fifth and final book of the Five Books of Moses. Moses begins his final monologue, five weeks before his passing. He recounts the story of the Israelite's travel through the desert, placing emphasis on, and rebuking them for, the story of the spies. He describes Israel's conquest of the Emorites and the Bashanites.
Our Ninth of Av Declaration: Following Bob's blog posts about atrocities through history
committed against Jews, Root Source launched an initiative to invite Christians to consider a list of these atrocities on the ninth day of the Jewish month of the Av and sign a declaration of repentance for these acts. The list of people signing the declaration will be presented to the Speaker of the Knesset and other Israeli leaders. This initiative has since gained traction and has been endorsed by numerous Christian leaders. We encourage you to add your name to the list of signatories to
the declaration.

Weekly Portion: Devarim – 21 – 9th Av
|
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Devarim Deuteronomy 1:1 – 3:22, on the first of Shevat (thirty-seven days before his passing), Moses begins his repetition of the Torah to the assembled children of Israel, reviewing the events that occurred and the laws that were given in the course of their forty-year
journey from Egypt to Sinai to the Promised Land, rebuking the people for their failings and iniquities, and enjoining them to keep the Torah and observe its commandments in the land that God is giving them as an eternal heritage, into which they shall cross after his death.
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Isaiah 1:1 – 1:27, is the third of a series of three “haftarot of affliction.” These three haftarot are read during the Three
Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av.

for the 9th of Av – THE
LIST

If you have signed up to receive THE LIST of atrocities against
Jews, you should receive that tomorrow, which gives you time to prepare for the 9th of Av.
My main advice is simple: Just block out some
time on the 9th of Av to read the truth for yourself: about 500 events over about 2,000 years in about 40 pages. I found the reading of it is not too difficult at first, but it gets worse. And in the process you will likely learn many things that you did not know.
Mossad Operation Retrieves Eli Cohen’s Wristwatch
|
Last year we did a story on the famous Israeli spy Eli Cohen whose secret work helped Israel take the Golan Heights away from Syria in 1967. Earlier this month Mossad has added a new facet to the story: they have retrieved the wristwatch he wore up until his last days, and have returned it to Eli Cohen’s
surviving family.

Ask the Rabbi: Would we be nearer to 6000?
|
This week, we feature a question from our student Dorothe who was curious about the counting of the Jewish calendar.
Dorothe asked:
Shalom, I’ve once heard and read also (just don’t know where again and I could find it in google either) that the current counting of this year 5778 (2018) is due to the fact that the sages subtracted the years of the exiles in Egypt and Babylon.
However I cannot find this information any more. Is it correct, have you heard of such a thing… would we be nearer to 6000? Blessings, Dorothe
