when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. This week, the weekly Torah reading Shelach, Moses sends scouts to
Canaan and all of them — except Joshua and Caleb — bring back frightening reports. The people react fearfully and rebelliously. God decrees a forty year delay until the Israelites will enter Canaan, during which time all males between the ages of twenty and sixty will perish. Many Israelites then attempt to unilaterally proceed to Canaan, but are cut down by the Canaanites. Various laws are discussed: libations, giving part of the dough ("challah") to a Kohain (Priest), certain sin sacrifices,
and the mitzvah of tzitzit. A Jew is found desecrating the Shabbat and is executed.
After last week’s column regarding Adam and Eve’s sin, let us take on a more pleasant topic, one not directly confirmed in the Hebrew Bible: Eve’s beauty. The topic of beauty, as it pertains to women, is a highly charged topic, even today. Much time and attention is spent by women to cultivate it, enhance it and to preserve it.
Conversely, men spend time observing and appreciating in ways too numerous to count.
Root Source Tours takes you to the Hinnom valley in Jerusalem that still shouts out its stories of Life, Death, Hell and Redemption. In part 5, we tell the little known story of pure water that
flowed consistently across the Hinnom Valley more than 2000 years ago, from Bethlehem to the Temple.

Weekly Portion: Shelach – June 9 – 26th of Sivan
|
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Shelach Numbers 13:1 – 15:41, Moses sends twelve spies to the land of Canaan. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and
warriors “more powerful than we”; only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as God has commanded.
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Joshua 2:1 – 2:24, tells the story of the spies that Joshua sent to scout the city of Jericho, prior to the Israelites’ invasion of the Holy Land, a point in common with this week’s Torah reading, which discusses the twelve spies that were sent by Moses years earlier to explore the Holy
Land.

Why was Eve so Beautiful?

Was it always so?
Was Eve beautiful?
And why should Eve’s beauty even matter to godly women today, who probably feel that they need to spend less time worrying
about their looks, not more!

Wow! This is amazing food for thought!

Our
student Anita enjoyed Root Source and had this to say. Anita wrote: Wow! This is amazing food for thought. I need to chew on this. I agree that women have long been trying to be greater than men. I think that’s what the
verse in Genesis means about Eve’s desire will be “to” her husband (ie) for his authority We are pleased to share with you this beautiful photo of the Golden Gate. Photo copyright by Sherwood Burton daystardawn@outlook.com. Thank you Sherwood for this
