When we persecuted Jews we broke all ten

This week, the weekly Torah reading Chukat, begins with a discussion
regarding the laws of the red heifer. Miriam and Aaron die. When the Jews are in need of water, Moses strikes a rock – despite being commanded to talk to it. Waters stream forth, but Moses is banned from entering Israel. Amalek battles the Israelites and is defeated. Edom and Moab refuse the Israelites passageway to Israel. The Israelites battle Sichon and Og, and are victorious.
Once I discovered some of this truth for myself in 2013,
I began to ponder which of the Ten Commandments was most closely associated with anti-semitism, and which of them were broken in the historical persecution of Jews by the Church. But as my knowledge of the tragedy increased, I kept changing my mind, until finally I threw in the towel and had to admit that we broke everything. We broke all ten.
Root Source Tours takes you to the Hinnom valley in Jerusalem that still shouts out its stories of Life, Death, Hell and Redemption. We cover the three valleys of Jerusalem, God’s original plan for this valley as a border between Judah and Benjamin, its use for child sacrifice to the god Molech, how it became to be synonymous with Hell, its use to convey water from Bethlehem and its destiny today and in
the future, as well as the lesson it carries for us all.

Weekly Portion: Chukat – 23 – 10th of Tamuz
|
IIn this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Chukat Numbers 19:1 – 22:1, Moses is taught the laws of the red heifer, whose ashes purify a person who has been contaminated by contact with a dead body.
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Judges 11:1 – 11:33, describes how the
people of Israel were attacked by the nation of Ammon. The Israelites engaged Jephtah to lead them in battle against this military threat. Jephtah first sent a missive to Ammon, declaring his peaceful intentions. In his message, he also discussed the Israelites’ conquest of the lands of Sichon and Og, victories which are related in this week’s Torah reading.

When Knesset member Yehuda Glick founded the Lobby for Encouraging the Study of the Bible, his aim was to build support for expanding the Jewish public’s study of this book. But the organization recently found itself co-sponsoring a joint Christian-Jewish Bible study
session in the Knesset in honor of Yom Yerushalayim—Jerusalem Day, the day marking Israel’s victory and its subsequent taking over all of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War.

Varda Epstein’s recent review of my book Ten From The Nations: Torah Awakening Among Non-Jews offers me a perfect opportunity to elaborate on how I see the world and why I do what I do. To the best of my knowledge, Varda and I have met
exactly once, fleetingly. Nevertheless, we maintain a mutually respectful, professional relationship and admire one another’s work. It’s important to mention that at the outset because, although our viewpoints differ on a number of issues, civility is important to both of us. And I thank Varda for her graciousness in giving me a chance to respond.
