This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, November 27th, is "Vayeshev" This portion tells about the stories of how Jacob's other sons sold Joseph into captivity in Egypt, how Judah wronged his daughter-in-law Tamar who then tricked him into fulfilling his oath, and how Joseph served Potiphar and was imprisoned when falsely accused of assaulting Potiphar's wife.

Parashat Vayeshev

Jacob settles in Hebron with his twelve sons. His favorite is seventeen-year-old Joseph, whose brothers are jealous of the preferential treatment he receives from his father, such as a precious many-colored coat that Jacob makes for Joseph. Joseph relates to his brothers two of his dreams which foretell that he is destined to rule over them, increasing their envy and hatred towards him.

The class examines why young people are especially idealistic, and how the goal is not to become “adulterated” and lose that idealism with age. Every society has a measuring stick: primitive man measured by one’s physical strength, western man- by his money or prestige. Accordingly, women and children are generally going to be second-class.
