Dear ,

This week, the weekly Torah reading Shemot, begins the Book of Exodus. Pharaoh issues harsh decrees against the Israelites, beginning decades of Jewish suffering and slavery. Moses is born and raised in the Egyptian royal palace. After killing an Egyptian, Moses escapes to Midian and marries. God appears to him in a burning bush and demands that he return to Egypt to redeem the Israelites. Moses returns to Egypt with the intention of freeing the Jewish people.

With a heavy heart we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved teacher MK Rabbi Yehuda Glick's dear wife Yaffi.

Weekly Portion:
Shemot – January 9 – 19 Tevet

In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Shemot Exodus 1:1–6:1, the children of Israel multiply in Egypt. Threatened by their growing numbers, Pharaoh enslaves them and orders the Hebrew midwives, Shifrah and Puah, to kill all male babies at birth. When they do not comply, he commands his people to cast the Hebrew babies into the Nile.

In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Isaiah 27:6–28:13; 29:22–23, parallels the week’s Torah reading on many levels. One of the parallels is the message of redemption conveyed by Isaiah—“and you shall be gathered one by one, O children of Israel”—that is reminiscent of the message of redemption that God spoke to Moses at the burning bush, a message that Moses then communicated to Pharaoh.

Happy studying!

Condolences to Rabbi Yehuda Glick

With a heavy heart we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved teacher MK Rabbi Yehuda Glick's dear wife Yaffi.

Yaffi was Rabbi Yehuda's faithful wife stood by his side during his activist years regarding the Temple Mount, and when he survived an assassin's bullets in 2014. It was his turn to nurse her when she suffered a stroke in June 2017, and today, January 1, 2018, she succumbed.

Please leave messages of condolences for Rabbi Glick and his family below as comments and we will deliver them to him when we pay our respects during this week of mourning.

Guest Blog: YOU!

A Message from Gidon and Bob:

The act of expressing yourself can be challenging and difficult, but it can be rewarding as well.

The last two weeks we have featured blog posts from two regular readers at Root Source: Sharon L. Hogeda and Dennis Northington.

We want to encourage more readers to submit ideas to us as well. We chose those topics because they were timely, interesting, and foster an appreciation for either the land, the state, the people or the Hebrew bible.

Note that these people were not try to promote their own material — they simply had interesting things to say or interesting stories to tell.  Many of you must as well, so please keep that in mind as we head into 2018.
