This week, the weekly Torah reading Ki
Teitzei, contains 74 commandments, more mitzvot than any other Torah portion. Some of the commandments discussed: the law of the rebellious son, the obligation to bury the dead without undue delay, the requirement to return a found object, the prohibition against causing pain to any living creature, the prohibition against prostitution, the laws of marriage and divorce, the procedure of the Levirate marriage, and the obligation to eradicate the memory of
Amalek.

Root Source Interview presents part 3 of the interview with Rav Dov Ben Shor. This time, he explains
the activities of the nascent Sanhedrin, and the delicate interplay between religion and the law of the land, and waiting for God’s timing. Can you guess what commandment was given by God, that they are eager to fulfill, yet if they they kept it would certainly get them arrested?

Weekly Portion: Ki Teitzei – September 2 – 11 Elul |
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Ki Teitzei Deuteronomy 21:10–25:19, seventy-four of the Torah’s 613 commandments (mitzvot) are in the Parshah of Ki Teitzei. These include the laws of the beautiful captive, the inheritance rights of the firstborn, the wayward and rebellious son,
burial and dignity of the dead, returning a lost object, sending away the mother bird before taking her young, the duty to erect a safety fence around the roof of one’s home, and the various forms of kilayim (forbidden plant and animal hybrids).
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Isaiah 54:1 – 54:10, is the fifth of a series of seven “Haftarot
of Consolation.” These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha b’Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

Day #1, 2 & 3 of a 30 day series of Torah thoughts by Rabbi Elan Adler. |
Root Source teacher, Rabbi Adler has started a 30 day series of Torah thoughts leading to Rosh Hashanah.
Day #1
A thought about sounding the shofar: at the beach, the lifeguard blows the whistle whenever someone goes too far, beyond the safety point.
The shofar reminds us not to wander too far on the oceans of life. We may have wandered from our tradition, our family bonds, our charitable nature, our faith in a higher power, our true and authentic selves. The shofar of Elul calls every Jew- EVERY Jew- and says, “My child, you have wandered a bit too far on the ocean. If you keep going any further, we may lose each other forever.” We have a month to make our way home.
