This week, the weekly Torah
reading Va’etchanan, Moses continues his attempt to impress upon the Israelites the importance of following God’s commandments, the rewards which will result from obeying God’s words, and the punishments they will incur if they neglect to do so. Moses recounts the story of the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai, and repeats the Ten Commandments. Moses designates cities of refuge. This portion also contains the Shema.
Among other areas of interest that Root Source’s Gidon Ariel has, he is also an activist for the Temple Mount.
Join him as he was one of the few people who succeeded in visiting the Mount during the two weeks that no Muslims were there, as there was a boycott because of the metal detectors that the Israeli security forces installed
after the terror attacks there on July 14, 2017. These visits were special, even historic, as they were peaceful, in contrast to virtually all visits by Jews over the last many years, when such visits are disturbed by Muslim activists.
Tomorrow, Tuesday August 1, the Jewish People will observe Tisha Be’Av, the somber fast day of remembrance for many and all calamities and
tragedies that befell the Jewish People. Many Christian friends of Israel and the Jewish People are considering praying or fasting as a sign of fraternity and identification with the Jews on this day. Join Gidon as he describes some of the basic information about this important if relatively unknown day on the Jewish calendar, and suggests a prayer Christians might pray on this day.

Va’etchanan – August 5 – 13 Av |
In this Shabbat’s weekly Torah portion Va’etchanan Deuteronomy 3:23 – 7:11, Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored God to allow him to enter the Land of Israel, but God refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised
Land.
In this week’s Haftara Prophets reading Isaiah 40:1 – 40:26, is the first of a series of seven “haftarot of Consolation.” These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha B’Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.
