Dear ,

We are departing from normal weekly Monday newsletter delivery to provide you with a special notice.

This Sunday, as we have introduced over the past two weeks, is Tisha Be'Av, the little-known but extremely significant Jewish fast day.

In this special newsletter, we bring you a special invitation to pray with and for the Jewish People, an initiative of our friend and student Allan Johnson that we embrace and support.

We also are sharing a teaching from Gidon about Tisha Be'Av, and an op-ed we wrote and published recently on Breaking Israel News about the connection between Tisha Be'Av and the Jubilee.

We wish you a meaningful day. May God have mercy and rebuild Jerusalem.

Christian Invitation to Pray

Tisha Be’Av: Day of Calamity, Prayer for Redemption

By Allan Johnson

It’s time to do this. Time for all Gentile believers to join our hearts and hands with those of the people of Israel and of Jewish people throughout the world; joining with them in what they themselves have been doing for almost forever now – entering into a time of prayer on the 9th of Av for the deliverance that the Lord promised them in Zechariah 7-8:19 would one day come to them – that He would transform these times of mourning and fasting into times of joy and celebration.

Let’s join with them in praying for this. The date this year is Sunday, August 14.

You’ve probably never heard of these things. I hadn’t either. But it’s time for us to all get on board. If you click on Gidon Ariel’s Youtube video, you can get some good background info on the history of these things and some thoughts on how to join in praying.

Ninth of Av: Two Additional Stories from Gidon

In this video Gidon Ariel tells two additional stories that will help Christians understand the perceptions of the Ninth of Av by Jews.

He first explains the reference to Jerusalem being plowed like a field, and the story of Rabbi Akiva who laughed at the destruction of the temple. The second story is of Napoleon’s visit to Jerusalem during the 9th of Av.

The Jubilee and the Ninth of Av

The day on the Jewish calendar that is commonly referred to in English as the Ninth of Av is in Hebrew, called Tisha Be’Av, literally meaning “9th in Av.” Av is the fifth month of the Biblical calendar that started in spring with the month of Nissan, and is the 11th month of the Civil calendar that began the Jubilee Year last Fall in the month of Tishri.
