This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, September 20th, is Parashat Nitzavim. In this week’s reading, Nitzavim, Moses gathers the Israelites on the day of his passing to enter them into a covenant with G‑d. He warns of the exile and desolation of the Holy Land that will result when Israel abandons G‑d’s laws, but assures them that they will eventually repent, and G‑d will then return His people to the Land. This portion also talks about freedom of choice and the mitzvah of teshuvah (repentance).

Parashat Nitzavim

Moses warned the Israelites not to be tempted by the idolatrous lifestyles of the Egyptians and the other sundry nations through which they had passed in the course of their travels. Moses warned of the dire consequences which will befall the individual, family or tribe which would forsake their covenant with G‑d. This section concludes with the concept of communal responsibility for not appropriately punishing individual sinners.

Harmony, Not Conformity

The midrash (The Pirkei De-Rabbi Eliezer, 24) describes how the people loved their tower more than people. “It had seven steps from the east and seven steps from the west. Bricks were hauled up from one side, and the descent would be from the other. If one man fell down and died, no attention was paid to him, but if one brick fell down, they would sit and weep…” This was not a society that cared about one another. A united society that is built on prioritizing material wealth- bricks and mortar– is not a sustainable community.

Parashat Nitzavim: Choose Life!

When Moses stands before the people in Parashat Nitzavim, something shifts in his voice. In contrast to the blessings and curses of the last Parasha, Ki Tavo, he’s no longer the distant physician delivering cold facts – “If you do this, you’ll live; if not, you won’t.” Instead, he becomes like a loving parent or mentor who leans in close and says, “Look, I’ve shown you both paths. Now let me tell you what I really think – choose life.” This isn’t just information anymore; it’s heartfelt counsel from someone who genuinely cares about the people’s well-being. Joshua continues this same intimate approach later, essentially saying, “You’ve seen what God has done for us. The choice is yours, but as for me and my family, we’re choosing to serve God.”

Abetting a murder by accepting a bribe is simply beyond the pale of acceptable societal behavior and the Torah states this adamantly in its list of twelve curses to be recited on Mount Eval, just north of the ancient city of Shechem.

Gidon and Dr. Booker engaged in a wide-ranging conversation about a variety of topics. They discussed the importance of prayer, the history of Jewish and Christian religious practices, and an upcoming event commemorating the settlers who moved to Israel 40 years ago.
