This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, December 20th, is Parashat Miketz. Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams, becomes viceroy over Egypt, and implements his plan to save the region from famine. Joseph is harsh with his brothers who come to Egypt to buy food, and demands that Benjamin be brought to Egypt. When Benjamin eventually comes he is framed and accused of theft.

Parashat Miketz

Jacob and his family settled in Canaan. Of all his sons, Jacob favored Joseph, the firstborn of his deceased beloved wife Rachel, and he made for him a special robe of fine wool. Joseph’s brothers were jealous of the favoritism, and avoided talking to Joseph. Joseph related to his brothers two dreams he had, both implying that he would eventually rule over his brothers—and thus increased his brothers’ envy and hatred.

Parashat Meketz: Divine Timing: The Butler's Forgetfulness and the Power of "Ketz"

This week’s Parasha relates how the chief butler forgets Joseph after being released from prison, despite Joseph’s significant role in interpreting the butler’s dream. This moment seems perplexing, as one would expect the butler to remember such an impactful experience. However, the text reveals that the butler did not recall Joseph until “the end of two full years” (Gen. 41:1), suggesting that the timing and circumstances of events are crucial in determining when opportunities arise.

Gidon and Alan, discussing their faith, shared stories and worked on a project to light up a church in remembrance of Kristallnacht. They also debated the war, with Gidon sharing his experiences giving lectures about it on TV stations. The financial practices of their organization were also discussed, clarifying their status as a registered incorporated church with the State of Texas and as a nonprofit entity, but not a 501 c. 3. The concept of free will and predestination in Jewish and Christian theology was a topic of their discussion, with Gidon emphasizing Jewish belief in free choice and Alan acknowledging God’s capacity to provide warnings or wake-up calls.

"Shalom, Gidon! Wonderful exchange with Jeff and should challenge assumptions by many Christians who claim to be “restoring New Testament Christianity.” Shifting the focus from “books” to “scrolls” was excellent and was also a wonderful reflection for me! As I recall you did not specifically answer the discussion questions itself. Jeff answered the Psalms and that may be true of Scriptures recited without reference to the amount of times they were cited. Otherwise, for sheer volume I still hold to the fifth scroll of the Torah, Devarim."
