This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, November 8th, is Parashat Chayei Sara. In this week’s Torah reading, Chayei Sarah, Sarah dies and Abraham purchases the Cave of Machpela as a burial plot for his wife. Abraham’s servant travels to Aram to find a wife for Isaac. Isaac marries Rebecca. Abraham dies.

Parashat Chayei Sara

Sarah died at the age of 127, and her grieving husband Abraham identified a plot in the city of Hebron that he wished to procure for use as a family burial ground. This plot, a cave situated in the Machpela field, belonged to Ephron the Hittite, so Abraham approached the Hittite tribe and asked for permission to purchase the parcel of land. Originally Ephron wished to give the plot to Abraham as a gift, but after Abraham insisted on paying full price the acquisition was concluded with Abraham paying 400 premium silver coins.

Until The Last Name: Gidon Ariel Reflects at Yad Vashem

Root Source CEO Gidon Ariel attended the “Until The Last Name” event at Yad Vashem, the Israeli Center and Museum of Holocaust Commemoration in Jerusalem. Yad Vashem, Israel’s World Holocaust Remembrance Center, has reached a historic milestone by recovering the names of five million Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

[When Moses] encounters God at the burning bush, God summons him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but Moses is reluctant. Who am I, he asks, to be worthy of such a task? God reassures him, and then Moses asks, Who are you? When the Israelites ask, who has sent you, what shall I say? God replies in a cryptic three word phrase, Ehyeh asher ehyeh (Ex. 3: 14).

Parashat Hayei Sara: The Pendulum of Life

The transition between Parashat Vayera and Parashat Hayei Sara represents a dramatic shift from intense, world-altering events to a more tranquil, routine existence. In Parashat Vayera, we see Abraham involved in monumental events like the destruction of Sodom, the Akeda, and divine revelations. These events are filled with tension and profound spiritual significance. In contrast, Hayei Sara focuses on quieter moments: Sarah’s burial, Isaac’s marriage to Rebecca, and Abraham’s final years, portraying everyday occurrences that are important but far less dramatic.
