This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, June 3rd, is Parashat Nasso. This week’s reading, Naso, is the longest single portion in the Torah, containing 176 verses. The reading starts with a continuation of the Levite census and a discussion regarding their Tabernacle duties. The laws of the sotah woman and the Nazirite follow. The portion concludes with the Priestly Blessing and the offerings which the Tribal leaders brought in honor of the Tabernacle inauguration.

Last week, we celebrated Jerusalem Day in Israel, commemorating the events of the June 1967 war in Israel. This article presents a good overview of the miracles of that war. Read below!

Parashat Nasso

G‑d informs Moses of the Tabernacle duties of the Levite families of Gershon and Merari. When the Jewish people journeyed, the Gershon family transported the Tabernacle tapestries, veils and coverings, while the Merari family carried its structural components, such as the beams, boards and pillars. A final count is given of the Levite Kehot family — those between the ages of thirty and fifty, as per G‑d’s command mentioned towards the end of last week’s reading: 2,750.

Parashat Bemidbar: Dismantling to Build: The Sacred Art of Deep Questions

Parashat Bemidbar presents us with a striking paradox: the Kehatites, despite being chosen to carry the sacred vessels of the Tabernacle, are forbidden from witnessing their covering. Only the priests may cover these holy objects before the Levites approach to carry them. This isn’t merely a technical restriction—it’s a matter of life and death. The Torah warns that witnessing “the covering of the sacred” poses mortal danger. Here we encounter a profound spiritual principle: not everyone can bear the process of dismantling the sacred, even those dedicated to God’s service.
