Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height. God met with him, and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.” The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word."

This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, June 14th, is Parashat Balak. In this week’s Torah reading, Balak, King Balak of Moab retains the sorcerer Balaam to curse the Jewish people. Instead of curses, only blessings come out of his mouth—including prophecies concerning the Messianic redemption. Moabite women entice some of the Israelites to sin, resulting in a plague amongst the Jews. Phinehas zealously kills two of the high-ranking offenders, and the plague comes to an end.

Parashat Balak

The Israelites have just conquered the Emorites and the Bashanites, the two mighty neighbors of Moab. Balak, king of Moab, worries that his nation would be the Israelites’ next victim. He sends messengers to the Land of Midian, to Balaam, a famed non-Jewish prophet and sorcerer, asking him to come and curse the Jews. G‑d appeared to Balaam that night and instructed him not to go to Moab. “You shall not curse the people because they are blessed!”

Parashat Balak: Two Paths to the Divine: The Contrasting Legacies of Abraham and Bilam

In Parashat Balak, the text establishes Bilam as an extraordinary figure whose prophecy is uniquely included in the Torah alongside Moses’ words. The sages compare Bilam’s greatness to Moses himself, noting that while no prophet like Moses arose in Israel, among the nations Bilam did arise with comparable spiritual powers. His prophecy contains profound visions reaching to the end of days, including the famous words “A star shall go forth from Jacob.”

What was the secret to its success? Was it yet another miracle provided gratis by G-d? Or was the cure precipitated by the gazers’ reawakened belief in HaShem?
