This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, April 12th, is Parashat Tzav. This week’s Torah reading, Tzav, continues describing the various sacrifices offered in the Tabernacle and Temple — a topic started in last week’s reading. This is followed by an account of the seven-day inaugural of the Tabernacle.

Parashat Tzav

Completing the process of initiating the priests, Moses anoints them with the holy anointing oil which is mixed with some of the blood from the altar. Moses instructs the priests regarding the consumption of the sacrificial meats, and tells them that this entire process will be repeated for the following six days, and during this seven day inaugural they are not to leave the confines of the Tabernacle.

Parashat Vayikra: The Burden and Glory of Chosenness: Leviticus and Israel's Priestly Mission

The Book of Leviticus is fundamentally centered on holiness in all its dimensions. While it contains laws about offerings (korbanot), its scope extends beyond ritual practices to encompass a comprehensive framework of sanctity that permeates personal conduct, interpersonal relationships, and spiritual identity. The concept of holiness in Leviticus transcends temple rituals to include moral behavior, with even seemingly secular transgressions like theft described as “a trespass against God.”

Gidon and Richard discuss the Verse from Hebrews 11:6, “God rewards those who diligently seek him,” and especially the first part of that verse, “Without faith it is impossible to please God,” and how that compares and contrasts to the passage in Mishna Pirkei Avot (Chapters of the Fathers), chapter 3 mishna 10: “those who are pleasing to others are pleasing to God, and those who are not pleasing to others are not pleasing to God.”
