This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, March 22nd, is Parashat Vayakhel. In this week’s portion, Vayakhel, Moses gathers the Jews and relays to them all the details regarding the construction of the Tabernacle and its vessels. The actual construction is also described. This portion repeats many of the details described in the portion of Terumah, wherein G‑d instructed Moses how the Tabernacle and its vessels were to be constructed.

Parashat Vayakhel

On the day after Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the Second Tablets, after successfully securing atonement for the sin of the Golden Calf, he gathered all the Jewish people. The primary purpose of this assembly was to inform the Jews of G‑d’s desire for a Sanctuary to be constructed. He began, however, with a brief reminder regarding the observance of the Shabbat.

Parashat Ki Tisa: Falling After Sinai: The Human Nature Behind the Golden Calf

The Israelites, seeking a tangible focus for Divine presence in Moses’ absence, created the calf as a dwelling place for God’s glory. This explains why they did not protest when Moses returned and destroyed it – once Moses was back, they no longer needed the substitute. The sin began with a legitimate desire for concreteness in their spiritual experience but gradually deteriorated into idolatrous revelry.
