This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, February 15th, is Parashat Yitro. In this week’s reading of Yitro, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, arrives at the Israelite encampment and advises them to set up a smoothly functioning legal system. The Israelites experience the divine revelation at Mount Sinai, and hear the Ten Commandments.

The Israelites were left traumatized by the overwhelming revelation, the awesome “light and sound” show. They turned to Moses and asked that from then on he should serve as an intermediary between them and G‑d: Moses should hear G‑d’s word and transmit it to the people. Moses agreed. The reading concludes with a prohibition against creating idolatrous graven images—considering that no image was seen when G‑d revealed Himself on Mount Sinai—and the commandment to erect a sacrificial altar. The altar stones should not be hewn with iron implements, nor should there be steps leading to the top of the altar.

Lesson 1: What is Wisdom

Moshe Kempinski shared his personal story and experiences, emphasizing the importance of understanding each other's perspectives, beliefs, and the value of mutual respect and openness in communication.

This interview with Gidon Ariel, conducted by Paul Calvert, discusses the Israel-Hamas conflict from an Orthodox Jewish perspective. Ariel recalls learning about the October 7th attacks after Shabbat, with Hamas killing over 1,500 Israelis. His family is directly affected, as his sons and son-in-law, all IDF reservists, have been deployed. He supports Israel's military response, opposing a ceasefire until Hamas is fully defeated. Believing that resettling Gaza is the only long-term solution, he urges international backing for Israel’s defense.
