This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, December 21st, is Parashat Vayeshev. In this week’s Torah reading, Joseph relates to his brothers his grandiose dreams of greatness, arousing their jealousy. He is consequently sold into slavery to an Egyptian master. 

Our beloved Root Source teacher, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz of blessed memory, left behind a legacy of Torah teaching. His organization and family continue that legacy, and have given Root Source permission to share these weekly thoughts with our Root Source audience. Jacob and his family settled in Canaan. Of all his sons, Jacob favored Joseph, the firstborn of his deceased beloved wife Rachel, and he made for him a special robe of fine wool. Joseph’s brothers were jealous of the favoritism, and avoided talking to Joseph. Joseph related to his brothers two dreams he had, both implying that he would eventually rule over his brothers—and thus increased his brothers’ envy and hatred.

Fear of God and the Hebrew Midwives

In the third lesson of our course, Fear of God in the Hebrew Bible, teacher Ann Levin delves into the story of the Hebrew midwives in Egypt from the Book of Exodus. These courageous women defy the powerful Pharaoh’s orders, risking their lives in an act of faith and moral strength.

Gidon and Richard had a wide-ranging conversation that touched on various topics, including the role of God in international affairs and global events. They also discussed the concept of free will in the context of their respective religious beliefs, the relationship between free will and the sovereignty of God, and the significance of the Jewish people in God’s plans.
