This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, June 22nd, is Parashat Pinchas. In this week’s portion, A census of the Israelites is taken. The daughters of Zelophehad successfully argue for a portion in the land of Israel.re initiated into the Tabernacle service. The “Second Passover” is instituted.

G‑d praising Phinehas, and rewarding his bravery by granting priesthood to him and his descendants. G‑d then commands the Jews to punish the Midianites by hounding and smiting them. The fulfillment of this command is described in next week’s reading. G‑d commands Moses and Elazar the High Priest to conduct a census of all males over the age of twenty.

In a rare role for women in the Five Books of Moses, five sisters came forward and stood before the nation’s leadership and the entire assembly with a plea. During the allocation of tribal lands in anticipation of entering the Promised Land, these sisters chose to assert a claim for their late father, Zelophehad of the tribe of Manasseh, who would lose potential land rights for his family because he had no sons, thus lapsing the family name.

Unseen obstacles along the way can be so frustrating! And when things are repeatedly not going as we have planned it can be positively maddening. Nobody expressed their frustration in a more human way than Bilaam, the heathen prophet on his way to curse/bless the children of Israel, when he became completely undone by the mysterious behavior of his donkey.

Moses and the Golden Calf

In this lesson, we will study one of the most disturbing descriptions of sin and punishment in the Hebrew Bible, the sin of the Golden Calf.  We will examine Moses’ reaction to the Israelite betrayal of the God that liberated them from Egypt and determine if this reaction was reasonable or overly zealous.

This lesson of Rabbi Adler is part of the course Shimon son of Gamliel.
