This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, April 20th, is Metzora. This Torah portion discusses the purification process and accompanying sacrifices for one infected with tzaraat, a discoloration condition on the skin. It then describes the process of treating a house infected with tzaraat and the ritual impurity generated by certain bodily discharges.

Parashat Metzora

This week’s reading, Metzora, discusses the purification process for one who contracts “tzara’at” (skin maladies which are contracted as a result of engaging in forbidden gossip), and the symptoms and laws of “house tzara’at,” indicated by certain stone discolorations. Following is a discussion of various ritual impurities, including the laws of the menstruating woman.

This passage deals with a condition on one’s skin called tzara’at (Hebrew). The condition described in these verses can be diagnosed only by a priest, and when confirmed, the leper is isolated for seven days as part of an elaborate ritual to cleanse them from their malady.

Tazria:

Unique in G-d’s creation, human beings contain within themselves inclinations toward good and also toward evil. In light of this reality the kohanim are entrusted with the responsibility of diagnosing the skin ailment known as tzar’at, an ailment which is a direct manifestation of an individual’s mastery, or not, over their inclination toward lashon hara – gossip and evil talk.
