This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, June 22nd, is Parashat Beha’alotcha. In this week’s portion, G‑d instructs Aaron concerning the Tabernacle Menorah lighting. The Levites are initiated into the Tabernacle service. The “Second Passover” is instituted.

G‑d commands Aaron to light the golden Tabernacle Menorah on a daily basis. Moses is then commanded to initiate the Levites into Tabernacle service. This inauguration procedure included shaving their bodies, immersion in a mikvah, and the offering of certain sacrifices.

Unconventional Hebrew expressions in the Bible invariably challenge biblical scholars as they seek to derive the passage’s implied, often nuanced, meanings. Here, the phrase, “When you raise up…” seems to be an awkward choice of words. A more straightforward instruction would certainly be “When you light the lamps….”

Initially, G‑d instructs Moses to count the Gershonites and Merarites, detailing their duties in caring for and carrying the Tabernacle's various components during the Israelites' journeys. The Gershonites are responsible for the Tabernacle's tapestries, veils, and coverings, while the Merarites handle its structural elements, including beams, boards, and pillars.

Gidon and Philip engaged in a wide-ranging discussion that covered personal updates, current events, and academic pursuits, with a particular emphasis on the historical roots and development of Zionism.
