In this Torah portion, Judah responds to Joseph's demand that Benjamin remain enslaved in Egypt, pleading to be taken as a substitute. Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers. At Joseph's request, Jacob and his family come down to Egypt.

In the end of last week’s Torah reading, Joseph demanded that Benjamin remain behind in Egypt as his slave. This week’s reading opens with Judah approaching Joseph and appealed to him to allow Benjamin to return to his father Jacob in Canaan. He spoke of Jacob’s reluctance to allow Benjamin – Rachel’s only remaining child – to make the trip to Egypt, and the great love Jacob harbored for his youngest son.

Learning from Joseph and his brothers’ encounter with Pharaoh, we can conjecture that meeting the imposing ruler face-to-face may have been intimidating. As a result, the brothers failed to remember Joseph’s coaching tips and just told “the unvarnished truth.”

Giant Footprints in Israel

Gidon and Alan engaged in various discussions about Alan's church operations, biblical interpretation, and religious texts. They also delved into the concept of free will and its significance in Judaism, the division of chapters within biblical stories, the significance of music in soothing King Saul, and the historical context of religious texts. They also touched upon the increasing number of Orthodox Jews who hold traditional beliefs but also have academic interests, the importance of questioning and grappling with the text, and the ongoing conflicts related to the promise of land from the Euphrates to the River.

I do not know what amount of grace this is. What a beautiful person commenting on Jewish culture Dr. Susanna Kokkonen is. She linked the Holocaust to Hanukkah so well. Also David Haivri, who was sketching the Battle of the Maccabees at Emmaus. I did not know there was such an amount of history and battles!
I confess to being ignorant in many ways, but Jesus gave me the grace to learn that this is a very important moed for the land of Israel, and it is something I will focus on even more after this excellent cultural initiative.
