This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, August 12th, is Re’eh. In this week’s reading, Re’eh, Moses continues addressing the Israelites just before he passes away; just before the Israelites cross the Jordan River and enter the land of Israel. Moses commands the Israelites to proclaim certain blessings and curses on Mount Grizzim and Mount Ebal after they enter the land of Israel. He directs them to destroy all vestiges of idolatry from the Promised Land.

Moses has been tracing the Israelites’ career as a nation through three key stages: slavery in Egypt (suffering and distress), survival and protection in the desert (maintenance), and anticipated bliss (joy and happiness) in the Promised Land and not just in the Holy Temple.

The land of Israel is a gift given to Israel by G-d, a gift which transcends us as individuals, but which, nevertheless, defines us, both as individuals and as a nation with a covenant with HaShem and a responsibility to the land. We can't take it with us, but we pass it on to our children. And by doing so, we live forever.

Abraham in the land of Gerar

In our first lesson of our course on Fear of God in the Hebrew Bible, we look to the book of Genesis and follow the patriarch Abraham in his travels and travails in the land of Gerar and in Egypt.  The differences between the King of Gerar and the Pharaoh of Egypt will highlight the purpose and the role of fearing God in the Hebrew Bible.
