This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, October 28th, is Lech-Lecha. This Torah portion recounts Abraham’s (here known as Abram) first encounter with God, his journey to Canaan, the birth of his son Ishmael, the covenant between him, his descendants, and God, and God’s commandment to circumcise the males of his household.

In guiding Abram to the Promised Land, God may have surmised that to sustain such a transformational change, Abram needed to disengage from all those close to him who would try to persuade him to return to the familiar Abram and not follow all these newfangled foreign ideas that threatened their belief system. Thus, Abram was to pursue his new spiritual career in a place where he could grow unencumbered by these well-meaning family efforts.

In the midst of a peaceful morning prayer session, Gidon Ariel, along with his son and wife, were immersed in the joy of the Torah. Their prayers began at 7 AM, and as they neared 8:30 AM, the community’s director delivered an unsettling message. He hushed the congregation and revealed that a national emergency had been declared. Shockingly, the Palestinians had breached the Gaza Strip fence and launched an invasion into numerous communities bordering the Gaza Strip.
