This coming Shabbat's Torah portion, read on Saturday, December 17, is Vayeshev. This portion begins the story of Joseph, describing his rivalry with his brothers, slavery in Egypt, and imprisonment after his master’s wife frames him in response to Joseph’s refusal of her advances. It also contains the story of Tamar, her husbands, and her father-in-law, Judah.

The Little Fast that becomes the Greatest Feast

After introducing the Jewish Calendar in a way you may never have heard before, Bob is asked to explain the fast that very few pastors in the Western world have ever heard of — the Fast of the 9th of Av. With that background he goes on to share what Christians have learned after commemorating that fast with the Jewish people over the last five years. The answer?  What Christians originally considered to be a niche holiday may well become the biggest Biblical feast of them all!
